Mark 5:18 “And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.”

Mark 5:19 “Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.”

When the man that had been freed saw that Jesus was leaving their country at the instance of the people, he begged to follow him. He wanted to be with Jesus, he felt indebted to the Saviour but Jesus’ answer must have shocked him.

Jesus said he shouldn’t follow him but rather go home. That looks like a rather bizarre answer. The logical thing would have been for Jesus to take him along most especially because of the attitude of the people of Gadara. It is obvious that they would be hostile to him but Jesus asked him to go home and talk to his family and friends.

Why would Jesus be so confident in sending a “just delivered” demon possessed man back to the same hostile community?

John 14:16 “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;”

John 14:17 “Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

John 16:7 “However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you].” (AMP)

Friend, Jesus didn’t send him back empty, he empowered him! I kept wondering what the world will be like if Jesus were to still be around physically? I’m sure many of us wouldn’t have access to him.

His protocols in form of Peter and co would fence several people off. Those guys at a time even prevented little children from having access to Christ. Even Mary his mother and siblings had to join the queue!
