Luke 1:59 “And it came to pass that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.”

Luke 1:60 “And his mother answered and said Not so; but he shall be called John.”

Luke 1:61 “And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.”

The most difficult thing for man to accept is change, but the most permanent thing on earth is also change. When we are too accustomed to a place, people or comfortable situation, we find it difficult to change.

Once men are used to a particular thing, they don’t want to challenge it neither will they embrace something new. Once something is contrary to the norm, man naturally rejects it. We love our comfort zone and want to defend it by all means, but the issue is that until we challenge the status quo, we will never experience the joy of better things.

This same anti-change situation is the reason why men defend old tradition either good or bad. Men will always fight to maintain customs and tradition for as long as they can. Such was the scenario of our focal scripture today.

The relatives of Zacharias have a predefined set of names that they bare in their lineage and those names have become their standards. Anything different from the names on that list is completely unacceptable to them.

Those men didn’t hide their feelings, they said to Elizabeth, “Woman, in case you don’t know (my version), There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.”

That is called a limiting believe. They have set boundaries and felt that no other person must cross the line. Once it is outside the boundary of tradition, it will not be entertained.

We see this being displayed all through scriptures and in our contemporary days. I have seen families where it is almost a taboo for girls to go to higher institutions of learning, in order words, nobody in their lineage bears the name “graduate”. It’s like being called John rather than Zacharias!
