THE FEAR OF GOD-2 
2Kings 4:1 “Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.” 
 
…From yesterday… 
 
Judges 6:13 “And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.” 
 
Gideon had an encounter with an angel, and he was sad because what they were going through was nothing like what their fathers told them about God. The children of Israel have been impoverished and held captive by the Midianites. 
 
Everything happening around them was contrary to what they were told about God. He could not comprehend what was going on with them in the light of the several deliverances they were told God made happen for them in time past. 
 
Well, the answer is not farfetched: 
 
Judges 6:1 “And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.” 
 
The truth is that God is not less powerful than he was in time past, just that sin has brought a separation. They no longer fear God and now worship other gods. No wonder the angel gave this instruction to Gideon: 
 
Judges 6:25 “And it came to pass the same night that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:” 
 
The LORD instructed him to tear down the altars of Baal which they had built. 
 
Friend, several contrary altars have been built in our day, which makes it look as if God is less potent than he was presented to us in Bible days. The fear of God has suddenly been relegated to the background in many lives, families, homes, businesses, and so on.
