EXCUSES-1
EXCUSES-1
John 5:6 “When Jesus saw him lie and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?”
John 5:7 “The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool; but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.”
In our focal scripture, Jesus asked the impotent man a seemingly simple question, but his response has nothing to do with the answer. The question was, “Do you want to get healed?” Rather than answer “yes” or “no,” he started explaining why he had not been healed in thirty-eight years.
This man has reasons and explanation for remaining impotent for thirty-eight years. He had enough “cogent” reason to remain sick. The truth of the matter is that he was simply giving excuses, which is what we all do or have done at one time or another to remove guilt and make us feel temporarily fine.
Excuses are simply “fantastic” reasons we give ourselves to explain away our failures and shortcomings!
The dictionary defines it as a false reason that enables somebody to do something he or she wants to do or avoid something he or she does not want to do. We put up excuses as an explanation for our behaviour that makes it appear more acceptable or less offensive.
But truth be told, there is no excuse cogent or powerful enough to explain failure; the reason been that we have seen people whose condition appears worse than ours achieve the same feats we excused away.
I once thought writing was something very difficult, which I might not be able to really do, but I discovered I love to read other people’s quotations and store them in my archive. Someone’s quotations I love so much were by a woman called Helen Keller.
She once said, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.”
One day, I stumbled on her biography, and it beats my imagination.
This woman was born like every other normal child but fell sick when she was nineteen (19) months old; this left her blind and deaf. She then had to struggle and make efforts to educate herself!
To be continued…
