2Kings 6:7 “Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.”

In our previous meditations, we saw that Elisha threw a stick into the water and the iron axe head started swimming and floated but in our focal scripture for today the prophet asked the young prophet to pick it up.

That was a bit puzzling because when the young prophet cried to him, he took it upon himself to cut down a stick and throw into the river. How come he didn’t pick up the already floating axe head and hand it over to the young man?

God is awesome, omniscient, all powerful and can definitely do all things. It would cost the Almighty nothing to give a brand new axe to the young man. God could actually have caused the axe head to float up to the river bank within easy reach.

In fact, if God had wanted to, He could have even had Elisha throw the axe handle itself into the water, have it marvellously join itself to the axe head, and have both of them rise out of the water and into the air, and caused them to rest on dry land.

Better still, God could have told Elisha and the young prophets to stay at home and then order the axe to go to the river side and chop down the wood needed for the construction. He can even dispatch some angels to go do the wood cutting; all these are possible scenarios.

However, God didn’t do any of such, rather, the axe head floated and the young man was asked to pick it up, which he did.

Hear me; in a time of crisis, our loving heavenly Father does not want us to be passive spectators. Instead, He graciously allows us to partner with Him in what He does to solve our problems and meet our needs. He does for us what is impossible for us to do; but then calls upon us to rise up afterward and do what we justifiably can do in response.
