2Samuel 5:22 “And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.”

2Samuel 5:23 “And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.”

2Samuel 5:24 “And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.”

According to historians and by counting directly from the Bible, we can see that David fought sixty six battles and lost none. In our focal scripture today, we can see one of the several tactics he employed during a life time of conquest.

The first time the Philistines came against David, he went to the stronghold and inquire from the Lord. He asked for strategy for battle and the Lord revealed it to him. When the enemy came against him this second time, he simply went back to God and enquired again.

While studying this piece, I asked myself what I will probably do if I was in King David’s shoe. Obviously, my first instinct was to go out and fight them again. I reasoned that it was the same enemy, at the same place within the same timeframe. I also reasoned that since I just recently defeat them, I will easily defeat them again by facing them directly.

Well, the truth is, many of us reason that way. We think we know it all and can easily achieve the same result against a familiar enemy. That the Philistines used the same strategy does not mean we should. If we rely solely on our wisdom we will lose to the enemy.

That the enemy came against David in similar fashion didn’t tempt him to attack them in a similar way. David never made a move without asking God. Every decision he makes was at the impulse of the Spirit.

Hear what his son Solomon said:

Proverbs 3:6 “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
