Luke 15:15 “And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.”

Luke 15:16 “And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.”

As I was meditating on our focal scripture, my attention got drawn to the food that was given the swine, which the prodigal son was begging for. What the young man wanted to eat so badly was referred to as “husks”.

Husk is the outer membranous covering of some fruits, nuts, and grains. It is usually the useless outer shell or an empty outer shell or covering that no longer serves any useful purpose! That was what the prodigal son was clamouring for, how sad?

The young man was begging for “food” (husk meal) which has no nutritional value and was denied.

Hear me; there are many things believers are running after nowadays which have no nutritional value to our spiritual life. You see people running from pillar to post for things that are of no significant value, no wonder the Bible says:

John 6:26 “Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.”

John 6:27 “Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.”

Hebrews 13:9 “Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.”

There is a type of meat which people run after, which does not profit them. There are desires that are wrong and inconsequential. The devil have lured many away promising them greener pastures, only for them to end up in pain, disappointment and disaster.

Friend, let the things that matter to God become the things that matter to you. There are things we run after that are of zero eternal value and we must run away from such.
