Genesis 28:16 “And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.”

God poured out blessings on Jacob, spoke to his future and gave him assurances. It was such a great time of fellowship. God even told him that, where he is will be given to him and his seed and that the place he stood is his.

God assured him that wherever he goes he must come back to this very place where they met. Put differently, Jacob has come to his place of fulfilment and destiny. He has arrived at his Promised Land. This very place is a place where Divinity meets with humanity.

God told him all he needed to know about his future and destiny which of course was tied to this very place. But, unfortunately, Jacob woke up and all he could say was, “…Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.”

The question I asked myself was, he knew it not but now that he “surely” knows it, what should he do? The simple answer is, stay put and watch God bring all his promises to pass!

That would have been the best thing to do but that was not Jacob’s action. The naïve Jacob got up, anointed the place, set up an altar, renamed the place, made vows and then:

Genesis 29:1 “…Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.”

He met God, knew what he was to do, had his instructions then continued his journey! What an action.

Friend, we may blame him all that we want but truth be told, many of us are like him. We know what God want us to do, we are sure and very clear with our mission, vision and assignment then move on to other things with the hope of returning back to our original assignment.

Some years back, I did a little study and discovered that most of the elderly pastors around us especially in most rural areas in Africa were retired school Principals, Head Masters and civil servants. They labored hard for the government and then retired back to serve God with their “remaining” energy.

To be continued…
