THE OLD GATE
Nehemiah 3:6 “Moreover the old gate repaired Jehoiada the son of Paseah, and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah; they laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, and the locks thereof, and the bars thereof.”
The third gate is called the “old gate”. This is another crucial gate that the believer in Christ must seek to enter. The word old has used here is not talking about outdated but rather about ancient paths and ways.
Friend, it is appalling to see and hear some so called modern day teachings which have bent the truth of the word of God in order to make it acceptable. There is nothing like modernization of the truth. Truth is truth and always constant.
There are old ways which has been set by God and there is simply nothing we can do about them. Failure to obey them is tantamount to disobedience; Jeremiah warned:
Jeremiah 6:16 “Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said We will not walk therein.”
Many believers now a days want something totally new. They want the latest teachings, revelations, behaviours and experiences that will conform to our current day. Jeremiah said explicitly that if we don’t seek and walk in the old paths we will not be at peace.
Solomon also said:
Proverbs 22:28 “Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set”
Some of these old paths include; honour for God, honour for parents and elders, telling the truth, loyalty, running from sin, singing psalms, prayer and fasting, showing love and consideration for others, using correct scale for measurement, giving and so on.
Those are some of the ancient landmarks that forms the old gate. They are all still potent in our days. Not honouring them has made many believers miserable and I believe that is why God is calling our attention to them once again.
I want you to take a look at your life and see where you’ve been violating the “law of the old gate” and make amendments. Return to status quo today, Selah!
