1 Samuel 11:1 “Then Nahash the Ammonite came up and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.”
God parted the Red sea and River Jordan for the children of Israel. These folks saw the wonders of God in unimaginable ways. The sun and the moon even stood at attention, refusing to set just because of them.
Now, Nahash the Ammonite threatened them and they went bowing, how sad! These men were clearly suffering from identity crisis.
When a man loses his identity in Christ, he serves and cut deals with his enemies. The problem however is that deals with the devil are usually terrible and unpalatable. The devil does not understand the language of mercy.
Everyone that has ever tried to cut deals with the devil have lived to regret it. Deals with the devil enslaves and destroys. The only thing the devil has to give are theft, death and destruction (John 10:10). When you want to cut deals with him, be mindful of these facts.
Let’s take a look at how their deal with the devil played out:
1Samuel 11:2 “And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.”
1Samuel 11:2 “Nahash answered, “I will make a treaty with you on one condition: I will put out everyone’s right eye and so bring disgrace on all Israel.”” (GNB)
1Samuel 11:2 “Nahash said, “I’ll make a treaty with you on one condition: that every right eye among you be gouged out! I’ll humiliate every last man and woman in Israel before I’m done!”” (MSG)
The devil didn’t mince words, he gave them two conditions. One: they should remove and give him their right eyes. Two: they must accept shame and disgrace.
Those are the things the devil has to offer and remember, you cannot give what you don’t have!
The devil went for their jugular. He wanted to completely put them to shame.
