Joshua 4:7 “Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.”

…From yesterday…

Here is the gist, God wanted the Israelites to keep this miracle in memory forever and the reason is simple; He want them to always know and remember that if He can part the waters of Jordan for them, He can always repeat the miracle!

He wanted them to know that if He did it before, He can do it again. He want them to remember subsequently that every Jordan can be parted.

God specifically directed Joshua and the representative of each tribe to take up the twelve stones and set them up as a memorial to forever remind them, the successive generations which includes us, that God’s miracles are still possible.

Hear what David said several generations after:

Psalms 44:1 “We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.”

Psalms 44:2 “How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out”

Psalms 44:3 “For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.”

Psalms 44:4 “Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.”

Psalms 44:5 “Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.”

Learn this about memorial and never forget it: A memorial is a weapon of war! It is a potent tool in the hand of a skillful believer! In Psalms 44, David used it to great effect.
