Joshua 1:8 “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”
To meditate means to concentrate, ponder and think about something carefully, calmly and seriously for some time. It means to hold something in mind over a period of time. It also means to keep gazing or focused on something.
The Hebrew gave a very interesting description. It says to imagine, study, mutter or murmur, speak, roar. I love the progression. It clearly shows the basic steps in the act of meditation.
When we are facing overwhelming circumstances, we must understand and quickly activate the meditation mode. To meditate, God told Joshua to saturate himself with the Word, then begin to think about that particular Word.
So, the starting point of meditation is having the relevant Word. That is why the Bible says:
Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
You can only meditate on the word you have stored up in your heart. When faced with a challenge, you pull up the word, picture it solving your problem by applying it mentally to your situation, study and gather two or three other relevant scriptures.
Then you begin to mutter it under your breath, after that, you start to speak audibly and finally begin to roar or shout it. Let these processes run concurrently and watch things begin to fall in place.
The process might look complex to you but the truth is that you know it so well, we all do! It is a process we’ve unconsciously mastered right from when we were young, for instance, you begin to have some strange feelings in your body and you were asked to go for a medical test. Chances are very high that you’ll get afraid. Where did the fear come from?
