The young man was given the car with which he celebrated his graduation with his friends by organizing parties and driving round town. They literally painted the town “red” as it were! He really had a nice time and “great joy”.
Several years down the line, the “latest” Mercedes Benz became “old modelled” and had to be sold off as scrap.
One day he went to check out the parcel of land that was once in the bush which no man would want but to his greatest amazement, it has been bought over by Walt Disney. It is the land where the current Disney World is built!
The young man cheated himself out of becoming one of the richest men of his generation by choosing not to delay his gratification.
A poor man always chooses to impress people and live only for the moment rather than project into the future. You must always have it at the back of your mind that the future will always come, but then what will be the effect of the decisions, actions and inactions you took today.
One man that fell into this trap in the Bible is king Rehoboam.
1Kings 12:6 “And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?”
1Kings 12:7 “And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.”
1Kings 12:8 “But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:”
