Judges 16:21 “But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.”

The Hebrew world used in our focal scripture for “eyes” is translated amongst other things to mean: “to humble” and “man’s knowledge”. That was something very interesting.

Bringing that together, it means the Philistines forced Samson to become humble and they made a mess of his wisdom!

It is a very dangerous thing to allow the enemy humble you. The devil is a very wicked teacher. Don’t go to school under the tutelage of the devil. You cannot go to school under him and return intact.

Samson was so full of himself and pride was a major part of the things that brought him down. Hear this:

Judges 14:1 “And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines.”

Judges 14:2 “And he came up and told his father and his mother, and said I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.”

Samson once saw a strange girl of whom he was not supposed to marry and he told his parents to marry her for him immediately! He listens to no one. It is said that the only person Samson listens to is Samson himself!

His strength misleads him to think he was superhuman and can violate the laws of God at will. His arrogance was second to none. He felt his human knowledge was sufficient to withstand the wiles of the enemy but how wrong he was!

Friend, the earlier you learn humility and less reliance on your own wisdom the better for you. Hear this:

1Peter 5:6 “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:”

Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Don’t learn humility from the devil, do it yourself and not only that trust God absolutely, don’t ever rely on your own understanding!
