Judges 16:4 “And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.”
Sorek means the richest variety or choicest wine, a vineyard or in modern language a brewery!
So, put differently, Samson was in love with the brewery! A lover of strong drink is a lover of death. Hear this:
Proverbs 20:1 “Wine is a mocker strong drink is raging and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise”
Proverbs 31:4,6 “It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish…”
Isaiah 5:22 “Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:”
Samson went to Sorek to fall in love and never returned. Friend, I’ve met several people like Samson who I concluded were simply deceived by their strength.
The ability of a man can become his Waterloo if it is not backed up by discipline and solid character. Like someone rightly observed, while commenting on Lift that Samson’s life was “too rough, careless and carefree”. That was the summary of his life.
Don’t ever let your knowledge, skills and strength puff you up. Don’t ever assume you’re immune to the things that have brought better men down. Many men that are better than you and I have come crashing down, so we must be humble enough to take heed to our doctrines.
Throughout the life of Samson, apart from fighting the Philistines, he was an expert at breaking the laws of God! He was a Nazarene and there were certain restrictions on their life but he broke each till he finally allowed his hair to be cut.
No matter how strong you think you are, never forget this:
1Corinthians 10:12 “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall”
Make sure you daily walk and work in the consciousness of the New Creation realities. Always check your affections and desires in line with the word. Don’t just think you’re standing, know and live it conciously!
