THE LORD’S VICTORY-1
2Samuel 23:11 “And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a piece of ground full of lentiles: and the people fled from the Philistines.”

2Samuel 23:12 “But he stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and slew the Philistines: and the LORD wrought a great victory.”

I love the way Shammah’s episode ended, the Bible says, “…and the LORD wrought a great victory.”

It looks as if the writer had it all wrong when you read the account. He told us about how others ran, how Shammah alone remained and stood his ground, defended the field and slew the Philistines. We saw a man of great skills discomfit the enemies single handedly.

We saw the doggedness, boldness and courage of this soldier which is worthy of emulation but the story ended by saying the LORD wrought a great victory! I thought it should have been and Shammah wrought a great victory.

The gist is this: There was no way Shammah could have taken on those folks alone and won, this is not film trick in a movie, this guy had help! There was an invisible host of military men fighting alongside him.

Friend, it doesn’t matter how skillful you are, you are not a man of war. You can never be as experienced in warfare as the devil, come to think of it, the devil fought in heaven, thousands of years before you came. If you think you can combat that kind of enemy with what you studied in military school, you must be a joker.

The problem of many people that take a stand against the enemy is that they feel they can always win by their own strength. Some rely on their skills, technical know-how, connections, money and even oratory. If you enter into combat trusting in yourself, you’ll woefully fail.

Shammah won but never gave credit to himself, he knew he had help and guess who helped him?

Exodus 15:3 “The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.”
