2 Samuel 23: 11 “And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a piece of ground full of lentiles: and the people fled from the Philistines.”

The book of 2Samuel 23 is filled with tales of David’s mighty men. It highlight the exploits, bravery and conquest of these men. In this devotion, we will by the help of the Holy Spirit pick lessons from the lives of two or three of them.

Our focal scripture introduced us to a warrior named Shammah. We understand from the passage that the Philistines invaded their land when it was full of lentils.

The statement “a piece of ground full of lentils” tells a lot about the event that occurred. This is an indication that it was harvest time. In order words, the enemy didn’t show up until it was harvest! When the crop was still in the ground and yet to grow there was no invasion, even before maturity of the crop, the enemy didn’t show up.

Friend, can you relate to this? It’s whenever you are at the verge of a breakthrough that the enemy shows up. The devil didn’t stop them from planting, weeding, fertilizing and tendering the lentiles, he waited till harvest, then struck.

This is a demonic strategy to stop a man from enjoying the fruits of his labour. Many a times the enemy want you to do the hard work and then move in to harvest where he did not sow. Hear this:

Isaiah 65:21 “And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.”

Isaiah 65:22 “They shall not build and another inhabit they shall not plant and another eat for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.”

Isaiah 65:23 “They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble…”

God understood the strategy of the enemy and He decided to make a solemn pledge with Israel in the passage above.

To be continued…
