1Samuel 17:48 “And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.”

1Samuel 17:49 “And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.”

1Samuel 17:50 “So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.”

I always say in our church that if you don’t allow the Holy Spirit paint the picture of what you’re reading in the Bible to you, you’ll miss valuable interpretations. You need imagination to read and understand the truth hidden in the Word.

If you study the account of David killing Goliath with a sling and stone, as depicted in our focal scriptures for today, you’ll agree with me that David was a man of great skills. I discovered from studying our focal scriptures that as David was running towards the giant he took the stone, sling it and shut it at the giant all in one sweep! He probably won’t have a second chance to do that anyway.

The only word that can describe what David did is expertise or mastery. It’s like in our modern day saying a soldier was running towards the enemy at a great speed, loading bullets into his gun and then aiming and shooting at the same time without missing.

Such was the accuracy of David. This account shows that he doesn’t just know how to use the sling and stone, he was an expert in the art. He has gained mastery of the process. David was not a novice, he was an expert.

Who is an expert?

An expert is somebody with a great deal of knowledge about, or skill, training, or experience in, a particular field or activity. He is one with the highest rank of marksmanship.
