THE SIN OF OVERCONFIDENCE-1
1Samuel 17:43 “And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.”

1Samuel 17:44 “And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.”

One of the major mistakes that leads to defeat in critical battles of life is what I call overconfidence. This is the quality of being too confident or excessively confident.

This is a biased way of looking at a situation. When you’re overconfident, you misjudge your value, opinion, beliefs or abilities and it prevents you from having an objective view and analysis of the situation.

It is good to have self-confidence or believe but not overconfidence. Never misjudge your strength as compared to that of your enemy. I’ve said it before that if I was Goliath on that day of battle and saw David running towards me with a “wooden staff” while I am holding a sword, I’ll retreat! After all they’ve retreated for forty days so if I ask to stand down for a day they’ll agree.

I’ll retreat to ask questions and probably do some reconnaissance research on David. If Goliath knew that this youth had killed lion and bear before, he’ll have approached him with more caution.

Friend, don’t ever be caught in the region of overconfidence, it kills faster than any weapon of war. In the battles of life there is something called “the element of surprise”.

The element of surprise is the unexpected or surprising character of something. It is a method of stealth or secrecy employed to catch someone off-guard. It is also taking strategic advantage over ones opposition due to the supposed ignorance of the other party.

The issue is this, when you’re over confident, you will never see the element of surprise. Overconfidence completely blindfolds you and you make assumptions that can lead to disasters or doom.
