1Samuel 17:40 “And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.”
A staff shows up in different forms with different people. A staff is custom made for each and everyone of us based on our different assignments in life. One person’s staff is not superior to that of another.
God gave Moses a literal physical staff but He gave Joshua a sword as his staff. He gave Samson supernatural strength and gave Solomon wisdom. He gave Joseph interpretation of dreams and Esther beauty. He gave Ahithophel the gift or staff of counselling, even though he later went rogue with it.
There were several people in the Bible who even went ahead and used their staff against God but despite that, He didn’t change His mind and stop empowering people with staff. God made sure He didn’t leave anyone without a staff.
Can you imagine Pharaoh using his staff against God? Pharaoh was given the staff of authority and leadership but he made a mess of it. He even challenged God to a combat!
Exodus 5:2 “And Pharaoh said Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go”
Friend, be careful not to misuse your staff. Remember, the One who gave you sure knows how to retrieve it. If you’re currently misusing yours, pause and have a rethink because you’re accountable to the Giver!
When God met with Moses and gave him the assignment, He didn’t leave him in limbo. Before the commencement of the mission, God asked Moses an interesting question:
Exoodus 4:2 “So GOD said, “What’s that in your hand?” “A staff.”” (MSG)
Moses has been moving around for several years with his staff so he comfortably answered God but what happened next probably threw him off balance.
