1Samuel 17:38 “And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.”

1Samuel 17:39 “And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.”

…From yesterday…

Right after the fall, man has been trying to reconnect back to God and as a result have designed a coat of mail for himself. Adam and Eve put on fig leaves after the fall.

Genesis 3:7 “And the eyes of them both were opened and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.”

Man has always been trying to get back to God on his own terms putting on his own righteousness. But, the only righteousness that can reconnect man back to God is God himself.

Man puts on all manner of stuff to appear righteous. He tries to look pious and holy, perform rituals, and carry out animal sacrifices. In the quest to get back to God, some even chose other gods like stones, images, rocks, rivers and the like to serve as intermediary between them and the true and living God.

All these religious activities and practices are all designed to get man back to God but have all failed. The only thing that can satisfy God is God Himself, no wonder He said:

Isaiah 64:6 “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away”

God likened all our righteousness to filthy rags. The truth is that, no matter how hard a man tries to please God, there will always be guilt lurking around in the dark and once the devil gets you to the guilt zone, you’re defeated.
