SON OF A CHAMPION-3
1Samuel 17:12 “Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons…”
1Samuel 17:13 “And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle…”
The Hebrew word Bethlehem means “house of bread” while Judah means “praise”. Bread talks about the word and the person of Jesus himself.
John 6:48 “I am that bread of life.”
In order words, BethlehemJudah means, someone who praises God based on the revelation of the word! David was no ordinary person. When you read the Psalms especially Psalms 119, you’ll understand his disposition towards the word. He praised God every day of his life.
As we’ve been studying from our focal scripture, David was called “…the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse” while his brothers were simply called “sons of Jesse”.
I want us to take a look at the common denominator between them which is “Jesse”. The Hebrew name Jesse simply means “substance”! It is interesting to note that David was called the son of Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah before been called the son of Jesse while his brothers removed the appeletion and simply called themselves sons of Jesse.
Here is the gist, the word substance as used here means wealth, riches and material possessions. His elder brothers were focused on material things while David was focused on principles and characters that can produce and sustain wealth.
Now, you’ll understand why he was the only one in the bush watching over their father’s sheep. His focus was not on substance but service. He was building the champion in him.
We can see a New Testament version of this brothers in the prodigal son and his elder brother (Luke 15). The younger son was focused on substance while his brother was focused on service.
Friend, are you building and developing the champion in you or is your attention on substance? Don’t ever let substance be your focus, look for that thing that can produce it. Get your priorities right!
