Luke 7:12 “Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold there was a dead man carried out the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.”

A Freebooter is someone that plunders or benefit from the misfortune of another. These are wicked opportunists who take pleasure in making business out of the trauma or misfortune of another.

There are people whose business have to do with misfortune of others. It might not sound too pleasing but that is the actual fact.

In our focal scripture, we saw that the dead man was been carried out of the city for burial. The Bible says, much people of the city was with her. It was a mixed crowd containing all manner of people.

Our focus today however, has to do with a particular group of people in that multitude, starting with the ones subtly mentioned in our focal scripture:

Luke 7:12 “…behold there was a dead man CARRIED OUT the only son of his mother…”

These are the people that carried the corpse. They are the undertakers and probably in that group as it was in those days were the wailers. The professional wailers help to cry, so people will know that the family of the deceased are really sad and of course they do it for a fee.

Even though we were not told explicitly, we know some folks must have gone ahead of them to the burial ground. These are the grave diggers who will also tidy up the grave after the final burial rites.

You may say it is their profession, no doubt about that but the focus today is not just about those physical guys, it is more about the spiritual freebooters.

Friend, there are agents of the devil who want to take advantage of your misfortune. They want you to lose your job so they can take over your position. They badmouth you to superior officers so that they can win their favour and unseat you.
