Exodus 17: 10 “So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.”
2. PARTIAL OBEDIENCE
1Samuel 15:2 “Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.”
1Samuel 15:3 “Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling ox and sheep, camel and ass.”
Several years after the encounter of the children of Israel with Amalek. God remembered how they waylaid his children and decided to deal a final blow on them. Joshua and his generation were long gone so he chose King Saul for the assignment. He heard the instruction and understood it quite alright. He went out to battle with Amalek but partially carry out the instruction.
1Samuel 15:9 “But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but everything that was vile and refuse that they destroyed utterly”
Saul demonstrated partial obedience in this scenario. He carried out the instruction quite alright but partially. On the surface, he seems to have done well but eventually the partial obedience caught up with him. Partial or incomplete obedience has led to several disasters including loss of life. King Saul eventually lost his throne because partial obedience is tantamount to disobedience.
Deuteronomy 12:32 “What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.”
Revelations 22:18 “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:”
This is another dangerous from of obedience.
