CHOOSE-1
Exodus 17:9 “And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.”

Today, we will be considering the instruction of Moses to Joshua. He said “Choose us out men…” Note that Moses didn’t just say bring me some men or gather strong folks to go out with you. He specifically used the word “Choose”.

The word choose as used here means to; “specially select”, “of good and excellent quality”, “having limited membership”, “most acceptable”, “meeting requirement”. It means to decide from among a range of options. To decide which among a number of different things or people is best or most appropriate.

In order words, Moses was giving Joshua a command to take a look and make a careful, well-thought out choice. Joshua’s assignment was to muster a task force but why would such discernment be necessary?

Friend, God is an excellent God and He doesn’t do things anyhow. He is very meticulous in the way He chooses His men. He looks deep down into the heart of man before making choices.

I have taken a look at some men that God used powerfully in the Bible and used and is still using in our contemporary world and came to the conclusion that His criteria are completely different from ours. Sometimes we are dazed when we see God using men like the “old” Abraham, “cunning” Jacob, “woman chasing” David, the “impulsive” Peter and the “killer” Paul.

It seems confusing and we wonder if God is condoning laxity but on careful study I have come to discover that the main characteristic that God looks for is the quality of our hearts. I got a glimpse into this when I saw why He rejected Eliab, David’s elder brother.

1Samuel 16: 7 “But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD LOOKETH ON THE HEART.”
