Exodus 17:8 “Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.”

We are still considering our focal scripture where the bible says, “Then came Amalek and fought with Israel…” The word “THEN” as we have seen earlier shows there were some preceding events before the attack.

One of the events was that they doubted God as we saw yesterday but there was yet another event.

Exodus 17:5 “And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go”

Exodus 17:6 “Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.”

After the murmuring of the children of Israel, Moses intervened and God came down and gave them water out of the rock. So they drank from the rock. Now, what was this rock?

1Corinthians 10:4 “And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them and that Rock was Christ.”

That’s quite interesting! They drank from the rock and the rock was actually Jesus Christ. Put differently, at this point they came in contact with the person of Jesus. In our contemporary day, we can say they got born again.

So, immediately they finished drinking from Christ the Amalekites came. Who are these guys? The Amalekites are direct descendants of Esau and we know that Esau is a type of flesh.

A.B Simpson, a bible scholar said, “Amalek was a type of flesh. He was descended from Esau, and Esau represented the carnal nature”. Amalek represents the hindrance to their walk with God through the wilderness.

Here is the gist, one of the greatest battles we will fight as believers is the fight against the flesh. The devil will always want the flesh to rule!

To be continued…
