PITFALL 2: SELF-CONDEMNATION-1

PITFALL 2: SELF-CONDEMNATION-1
Job 18:10 “The snare is laid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way.”

Job 9:20 “If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse”

Today, we move to our second pitfall which I call Self-condemnation. This is also another very serious but rather subtle trap which the enemy uses against the believer. This pitfall is a silent killer and many have gone to their early grave because of this menace.

If a man is condemned, it means he has been found guilty of a crime and cannot escape the punishment. This is usually a result of a trial in a court of law.

However, self-condemnation means someone is condemning himself or herself. This is a very unusual human behavior because most of us are always quick to defend ourselves. Man is defensive in nature and will always want to defend himself when under attack but a person suffering from self-condemnation does the exact opposite.

He or she is the one condemning himself/herself. He is feeling guilty of something he has done and won’t even mind punishing himself. A major trait of this feeling is hopelessness and helplessness and often depression.

In our focal scripture, Job said his mouth condemns him. He tore himself down with his own mouth.

Characteristic traits of self-condemnation are but not limited to the following: Nervousness, depression, defensiveness, suspicion of others, sleeplessness, fear and panic, fight, insecurity, lack of concentration, shallow friendship, blaming others, addictions and so on. When you start experiencing any of these negative emotions, you must watch out for condemnation.

Let us consider the causes of self-condemnation:

1. GUILT FROM PAST MISTAKES
One of the greatest causes of self-condemnation is the feeling of guilt from past mistakes and sin. Self-condemnation makes it impossible for a man to forgive himself for a past wrong.

I have seen men become drunkards and wasted because they could not forgive themselves for a past mistake.
