PITFALL 1: PRIDE-6

PITFALL 1: PRIDE-6
Job 18:10 “The snare is laid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way.”

Proverbs 8:13 “To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.” (NIV)

…From yesterday…

As soon as he finished speaking, his people started praising and applauding him. They told him he was no longer human! They equated him to God.

I can imagine Herod grinning from ear to ear. Little did he realise he was sitting on a pitfall, decorated as a throne. The people were literally saying he has become their god! He accepted all the accolades, equating himself to God, just about then heaven responded:

Acts 12:23 “And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost”

What a response! Pride truly destroys. However; this response wouldn’t have baffled me, if not for what happened earlier in the same chapter.

Acts 12:7 “And, behold the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and HE SMOTE Peter on the side, and raised him up saying Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.”

Earlier, Peter was also smitten by an angel; perhaps by the same angel. I want to assume that angel was still in the vicinity after setting Peter free, or was probably on his way back to heaven when he overheard what Herod said, the comment of the people, and Herod’s response.

Two men were touched by an angel and two different things happened. One was delivered from prison, the other end up dead.

Friend, be careful when men start praising you, some might even do it from a sincere heart; but it’s up to you to respond correctly because heaven is watching.

Note that nothing happened to the people praising Herod, but he died.

You must learn to give God all the praises due to His name.

To be continued…
