Job 18:10 “The snare is laid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way.”

Proverbs 8:13 “To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.” (NIV)

…From yesterday…

Exodus 20:3 “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

Isaiah 44:6 “Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.”

The first commandment is that we must not have any other gods besides Him. The problem with the pitfall of pride is this; it makes a man replace God with himself. He becomes a god unto himself.

Many people replace God with money, idols, other relationships and so on but with pride, a man replaces God with himself. That’s a terrible thing to do but we do it innocently, thinking it is self-esteem!

What are the sources of pride or how does a man become proud?

1. Our achievements:
Let us take a cue from king Nebuchanezzar. This ancient king conquered Israel setting up the great Babylonian empire. His kingdom became very powerful, and his achievements in those days was second to none. Hear him:

Daniel 4: 30 “The king spake and said Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by THE MIGHT OF MY POWER, and for THE HONOUR OF MY MAJESTY?”

What a way to describe his achievements. We might think that was Nebuchadnezzar but the truth is that many of us are worse than him. You look at yourself in the mirror and say; “I am so beautiful. I am finer than everybody around me.”

You come first in an exam and you become full of yourself. You made some good money and you change the way you walk; you’re now bouncing instead of walking.

Some people achieve an uncommon feat and they now talk to people anyhow, throwing respect into the trash can.

To be continued…
