Psalms 23: Goodness and Mercy-1
Psalms 23:6 “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”
I once read the story of a small boy Johnny by name, who schooled not too far from home. Johnny was in kindergarten and he’s always escorted to school by his mother. However, it got to a time when he started feeling embarrassed whenever his mum escorted him, mainly because some of his friends makes jest of him.
He got home one day and told his mum he’ll love to be walking to school with his friends. Her mum wasn’t comfortable with this arrangement but didn’t want her son to develop an inferiority complex. So she hatched a plan.
Johnny’s mum had a new neighbour who normally follows a path leading thorough her sons school for his early morning jogging and exercises.
She approached him and begged him to keep an eye on her little boy while he jogs. The man who normally go jogging with his wife willingly agreed. Johnny’s mum begged them to make the whole jogging stuff look normal so that her son won’t suspect it was prearranged.
This couple started following Johnny and his friends each day while maintaining a healthy distance.
After about two weeks a friend of Johnny asked him if he noticed the couple who always seems to be running after them each day. Johnny said they’re Mr Goodness and Mrs Mercy nonchalantly.
His friends were perturbed, wondering where he knew them. Johnny said he doesn’t know them but every night his mum always makes him say the 23rd Psalm since she worries so much about his safety and the Psalm says;
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” He continued, “I have made up my mind to get used to them following me and so should you all’.
Friend, how I wish we all can accept this beautiful Psalm with the simplicity of Johnny.
