​Keeping up appearances-1

2 Timothy 3:5 “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”

2 Timothy 3:5 “They’ll make a show of religion, but behind the scenes they’re animals. Stay clear of these people.”

In this meditation, we are going to be considering the phrase “keeping up appearances”. It is an English idiom which means to pretend to be happier, less poor, more spiritual, richer and more sophisticated than you really are, because you do not want people around to know how bad your situation is. 

Have you ever act like that or come across people who are good at keeping up appearances before? People that do this tries to make things look right and great whether they are or not. They are good at faking and pretending. 

I have seen people who borrow and go into debt just because they want to impress others and put themselves a class they are not. You even see couples who are unhappily married keep up appearances for the sake of their children and others around them.

In this series, the Holy Spirit want to have a go at those who do a similar thing in their spiritual lives. People who don’t understand the operations of spiritual matters and God’s righteousness but try to keep up spiritual appearances by doing spiritual looking things so that other people will think they are wonderful and powerful Christians. 

They even have “Christian language” but they don’t know jack about the operations of God and the power of the gospel. You see and meet Christians who simply want to “feel among” but whose heart is far from God.

They have a form of godliness but lacked the power and character of Christ. They are good at acting and making a show of religion. Paul in our focal scripture even advices his son Timothy to stay clear of such people.
