While men slept-1
Matthew 13:25 “But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.”
Our focal scripture talks about the problem men including you and I normally have if we go to sleep. It simply shows that “falling asleep” is very dangerous!
I guess you’re probably wondering what I am getting at since sleep was designed by God to rest our body. I am sure you also know that it is only God that doesn’t slumber or sleep.
Psalms 121:4 “Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”
Psalms 121:4 “Not on your life! Israel’s Guardian will never doze or sleep.” (MSG)
Well, here is the gist, we are not talking about sleepiing physically. The word “slept” as used in our focal scripture is derived from the Greek word, ‘katheudō’, which aside from normal sleep means; “to yield to sloth and sin”, “to be dead physically or spiritually” and “to be indifferent to one’s salvation!”.
That’s a serious issue. The challenge however is that we all fall into this mood at different times in our lives and this has led to series of problems for several believers.
There are so many stories in the bible we read and conclude that what happened was wrong and sad but many times we fail to study and understand the underlying problem. Most of the problems here are simply because the men in question “fell asleep” when they should be spiritually alert and awake.
Let’s see one or two examples:
The problem was never Bathsheba, it was about David falling asleep. The great king slept while on duty!
2 Samuel 11:1 “And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth [to battle], that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.”
