Mighty but Timid-1
Judges 6:11 “And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.”
Judges 6:12 “And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.”
Our focal scripture today introduces us to a Judge whom God raised to bail out Israel. His name was Gideon but up till this time he had no consciousness of the destiny he carried. He knew almost next to nothing about himself, his ancestry, giftings and the call of God upon his life.
As a matter of fact he was threshing wheat by the winepress! In order words he was doing the wrong thing at the wrong time, at the wrong place. Everything about this young man was wrong. His life was a total mess and in shambles.
Let’s take a trip back in time and do a little analysis of his background. Gideon was at Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite. An understanding of these Hebrew words will shed some light on who he really was.
The Hebrew word Ophrah is translated to mean earth or land.
Joash his father’s name means self-Existent or Eternal. In order words Joash means Jehovah, that is, God Himself. It also means given by the Lord.
The word Abiezrite means father of help, protect or aid. It also means my father is help. Gideon means great warrior, hewer or one that can destroy enemies or anything.
We can deduce from the above analysis that Gideon the great warrior was birthed by Jehovah God Himself, in order words, he is the son of God given as a warrior to the land of Israel. He is also a man that has been greatly helped by God
A great warrior, son of God, birthed by God, aided and greatly helped by God, possessor of the Land; what an intimidating resume. That was the man Gideon.
