Lessons from the Fig
Mark 11:13 “And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not [yet].”
Mark 11:14 “And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.”
The fig tree in our focal scripture didn’t bother about fruits; it was busy using leaves to deceive people.
Friend, I know you’re very “leafy” but are you “fruity”? Your good works and hypocrisy may fool men for some time but soon they will come to your tree and demand for the fruits!
If a tree claims it can give you apple, you need not stress yourself, all you need do is wait for it to fruit. The fruits will reveal the true nature of the tree. In the same vein, we humans show our deep believes and convictions by the fruits we bear. It is the fruits we bear that shows who we really are.
A question that readily comes to mind while reading this passage is, Why did Jesus curse this tree? Does he have the right?
I want you to note that the term “cursed” was not used by Jesus. It was Peter that used it:
MARK 11:21 “And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away”
The word curse as used here simply means “a pronouncement of judgment upon a person or object”. Jesus simply gave a pronouncement of judgement on the fig tree, but Why?
The answer is simple: The Fig tree was not operating in purpose, it was fruitless. This tree perverted the order of God. God designed it to bring out leaves and then fruits but this particular tree did otherwise.
Friend, where are your fruits? What is your focus? What are you doing about your purpose? Where have you been perverting the order of God?
