Lessons from the Fig
Mark 11:13 “And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not [yet].”
Just leaves! Leaves represent works and hypocrisy. This was clearly the position of this tree. Full of “works” and highly hypocritical. This tree was so hypocritical; it was trying to deceive the very God of the universe!
Friend, this tree is a picture of several believers. At first glance they “look born again” but on moving close to them, their attitude and characters are complete turn off. Hear this:
Matthew 23:27 “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.”
Matthew 23:28 “Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.”
Matthew 23:28 “People look at you and think you’re saints, but beneath the skin you’re total frauds.”(MSG)
The question is who really are you? It’s very easy to put up a religious and holy appearance in church but something completely different outside. Many wear a saintly mask to cover up their rotten characters and behaviours.
Jesus hit the Pharisees hard by being very blunt with them. This is the same attitude our dear fig tree put up.
I know you’re thinking but nobody is perfect, sure we all have issues to deal with but the question is, “Are you dealing with the issues, or simply putting up a fake appearance?”
When your mask is removed who exactly are you? Are you a saint or a total fraud? Are you outwardly righteous and internally rotte
If there is anything that God detests with a passion, it is hypocrisy. When Adam and Eve made garments of fig leaves, God came to them and quickly removed it and put on them the garment of animal skin
