Beyond the Tower of Bethel and Edar-4

Beyond the Tower of Bethel and Edar-4
Genesis 35: 21 “And Israel journeyed and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.”
…From yesterday…
The first monument made him joyful, whereas the second made him sad. So, Jacob had these two important monuments in his life.
In the Hebrew, the Tower of Edar means a place of excellence, increase, honour and or a place to lay wreath, such as is placed on a grave. It was for him a place of mixed feelings.
He had another son from his beloved wife, but also lost the wife there. Jacob built this monument and I am sure he must have built it with a very heavy heart.
All said and done, Jacob went ahead and did something remarkable, which is our focus in this meditation:
Genesis 35: 21 “And Israel journeyed and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.”
The bible said, “he journeyed and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.”
Earlier on, the bible records that after his meeting with God at Bethel and after building the tower, he moved on, continuing his journey.
Genesis 35: 16 “And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath…”
The interesting thing about this man and the great lesson I learnt from his story is that he always “journeyed from or beyond” his present location.
Here is the gist: Jacob or Israel, as he is also called, understood a basic principle of God. It is called the principle of progress.
In the plan of God, progress is a must. It doesn’t matter what your situation is, God expects you to make progress.
Jacob “hit it big” at Bethel when he spoke with God. It was one of the high moments of his life. But then, he went ahead, he continued his journey, he made progress. He did not settle down to that; he moved on.
To be continued…
