Beyond the Tower of Bethel and Edar-3
Beyond the Tower of Bethel and Edar-3
Genesis 35: 21 “And Israel journeyed and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.”
…From yesterday…
Just before Ephrath, was a place called Bethel. At Bethel, God appeared to Jacob and they had a wonderful discussion. God assured him of the promises he made to him:
Genesis 35: 11 “And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;”
Jacob was excited and he built a pillar or set up a monument at Bethel where God appeared to him. The first monument he set up was one to depict where God spoke to him.
It was a place of happiness and joy. He put up the tower as a memorial of a joyous moment.
Interestingly, Jacob didn’t remain there, he continued on his journey. His aim was to get to Ephrath, but on the way his beloved wife Rachel went into labour, she gave birth to her second child before she eventually died.
Genesis 35: 19 “And Rachel died and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.”
Genesis 35: 20 “And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave unto this day.”
After her demise, Jacob buried her and setup a second monument within days of setting up the one in Bethel. This one was called the Tower of Edar.
The sad part of this particular tower is that it was a memorial tower. It was a tower that made him sad. Rachel was his beloved wife, for whom he labored for fourteen years to marry. It was love at first sight but he lost her at Edar. Edar was a tower that caused him so much pain and anguish.
The first monument made him joyful, but the second made him sad. So, Jacob had these two important monuments in his life.
To be continued…
