Genesis 21:14 “And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave [it] unto Hagar, putting [it] on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.”
Genesis 21:15 “And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.”
Hagar left Abraham’s house with her son and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. Soon Abraham’s bottle of water finished and she dropped her son under one of the shrubs to die.
Genesis 21:16 “And she went, and sat her down over against [him] a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against [him], and lift up her voice, and wept.”
She gave up all hope and was waiting for death. She concluded that her son would die, and of course follow suit herself. She simply sat down and wept. She didn’t pray to God, she didn’t make an attempt to get water or look around for help.
She gave up completely, wandering in the wilderness of Beersheba.
Here is the gist, Beersheba means  “well of the sevenfold oath”, it also means ” well or spring”. Beersheba simply means a place that contained seventy (70) Wells or springs of water. The place was so named because of the abundance of water.
Beersheba was an oasis in the wilderness. As a matter of fact, people stayed not too far away from her. Hagar was in the midst of plenty but yet was suffering, and could have died with her young child, but for divine intervention.
Friend, have you given up on life? Have you cast your life, dreams, aspirations and future under a shrub? Perhaps you’ve abandoned your potentials, concluding that nothing good can ever come out of it.
I have news for you. Stop crying in Beersheba! There are seventy Wells available to you.
