Keep Away from Gerar-5
Genesis 20:1 “And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.”
Genesis 20:2 “And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She [is] my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.”
…From yesterday…
This was not the first time Abraham went on this type of “sojourns”. Recall what happened to him earlier on:
Genesis 12:10 “And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to SOJOURN there; for the famine [was] grievous in the land.” (Emphasis mine)
You can see that word ‘sojourn’ again. On this occasion, he went to Egypt and ran into the same mess. God protected him from Pharaoh the same way he protected him from Abimelech, but there was a problem.
Abraham used “Sarah’s beauty to enrich himself in Egypt”. He went and tried it again in Gerar:
Genesis 12:14 “And sure enough, when Abram arrived in Egypt, everyone spoke of Sarai’s beauty.”
Genesis 12:15 “When the palace officials saw her, they sang her praises to Pharaoh, their king, and Sarai was taken into his palace.”
Genesis 12:16 “Then Pharaoh gave Abram many gifts because of her—sheep, goats, cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels.” (NLT)
Can you imagine that? Now, what was the problem? Pharaoh gave him male and female servants, and, guess what? Among the female servants was a lady called Hagar, a time bomb!
Genesis 16:1 “Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had not been able to bear children for him. But she had an Egyptian servant named Hagar.”(NLT)
We know how it ended between Abraham, Hagar and Sarah. Hagar gave him Ishmael; the rest, as they say, is history.
Friend, watch were you sojourn to; the devil may just be preparing a Hagar for you. Stay away from Gerar; instead dwell between Kadesh and Shur, Selah.
