Psalms 44:3 “For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.”

David was a warrior too and knew all the antics and strategy of war, so he knew what he was saying. He simply gave us the secret behind their success, which was the secret behind his as well.
Although they fought with powerful weapons and skills, he said it was not enough to save them. He then went ahead and revealed the real reason for their several victories.
Psalms 44:3 “…but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.”
I love the Message and Contemporary English Versions:
Psalms 44:3 “We didn’t fight for this land; we didn’t work for it–it was a gift! You gave it, smiling as you gave it, delighting as you gave it.” (MSG)
Psalms 44:3 “Their strength and weapons were not what won the land and gave them victory!  You loved them and fought with your powerful arm and your shining glory.” (CEV)
Beloved, take a cue from this great warrior; there is someone beyond your sword! Let me further prove it to you:
Joshua 5:13 “And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, “[Are] You for us or for our adversaries?””
Joshua 5:14 “So He said, “No, but [as] Commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?”” (NKJV)
In the above scenario, the children of Israel were at war and Joshua as the commander went out on a reconnaissance mission.
