Mighty, But Sick-2
John 11:1 “Now a certain man was sick named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.”
John 11:2 “(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick)”
…From yesterday…
Our focal scripture also described the town Bethany as “the town of Mary and her sister Martha”. That says a lot about the personalities of these two women as well.
The bible makes us to realize that literally, Bethany belonged to Mary and her sister Martha. This simply means that these two sisters were women of influence in the town. It means once you entered the town and you mentioned their names, everybody seemed to know them.
Perhaps they controlled the economic terrain of the town of Bethany. As a matter of fact, we know from scriptures that they were very wealthy.
Mark 14:3 “And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.”
Mark 14:4 “And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said Why was this waste of the ointment made”
Mark 14:5 “For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.”
In this account, Mary went into a house where Jesus was and broke an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard, the bible says it was very precious. People that were there, including Jesus’ disciples and some other rich folks couldn’t believe what this woman did.
This perfume was spikenard, a special type of nard obtained from a plant in India, common among rich Arabs. It was one of the most expensive perfume in their days, and it is said that it would take a man working and saving his salary for a whole year without taking a dime out of it to buy it.
