LESSONS FROM LAZARUS

Mighty, But Sick-1
John 11:1 “Now a certain man was sick named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.”
John 11:2 “(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick)”
Over the next couple of days we will be picking up different lessons from the life and story of Lazarus. We can tag the general theme for this piece as “LESSONS FROM LAZARUS”, albeit we will be discussing it under different sub-headings.
Our focal scripture today introduced us to the man Lazarus. Looking at this man critically I saw some very interesting things.
The name Lazarus simply means mighty, powerful and strong. This man was a powerful man, he was a man of might and great strength, but then he became sick. This powerful man became feeble, weak and had a disease. As powerful as he was, he developed a weakness.
Friend, this may be your situation. You may be a man of great strength and power, but weakness has showed up somewhere along the line. You may even be a powerful man having a weakness that always cripples you. I have news for you, you are not alone in this.
Remember Naaman? Hear this:
2Kings 5: 1 “Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable because by him the LORD had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a leper”
Look at the intimidating CV of this Army General, Naaman by name. He was a great man, captain of one of the most powerful armies on earth as of then, a mighty man of valour, very honourable too, alas, he was a leper! What is your own leprosy?
Our focal scripture also described the town, Bethany as “the town of Mary and her sister Martha”. That says a lot about the personalities of these two women as well.
To be continued…
