God, on Your Terms-1
Deuteronomy 5:33 “Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and [that it may be] well with you, and [that] ye may prolong [your] days in the land which ye shall possess.”
Deuteronomy 5:33 “Walk straight down the road GOD commands so that you’ll have a good life and live a long time in the land that you’re about to possess.” (MSG)
Many people want to serve God, but on their own terms, not on God’s terms. They want God to be their errand boy. They make plans, scheme and work out their “super strategy” based on their education, technical know-how and proficiency, and then submit to God for sanction.
In fact if they feel “God is taking too long a time” coming forth with a response, they move ahead without him.
These folks come to church when they want, pray when they feel like, fast occasionally, read their bibles only when they’ve had a bad dream, etc. Yet they want God’s very best. Who does that?
Can you imagine a sick fellow telling the doctor what drugs he will like to take for his illness? When he’ll like to take the medication and how he’ll like to take it. This is despite the fact that he knows next to nothing about medicine!
The issue is that many of us don’t try this with doctors, nurses, etc; instead we adhere strictly to their instructions, but when we come to God we want to dictate the terms of reference!
We want to tell God how He should run things. We want to deal with Him on our own terms. It’s important to note that every time we violate God’s instructions we are actually operating on our own terms.
You become a god to yourself when you choose the instructions you like or think you should follow. What’s the point in serving a God you will not obey? Somebody captured it fittingly when he said, “When you choose what instruction of God to obey and which of His instruction to disobey, it is not God you are obeying, it is yourself you are obeying.”
I have seen initiates of deities follow instructions to the letter. I have seen them observe taboos as if their lives depend on it, yet those are gods they have carved for themselves. These are deities that have ears but cannot ear; they have eyes but cannot see.
