The Greater One-2
1 John 4:4 “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
1 John 4:4 “But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.” (NLT)
1 Samuel 4:11 “And the Ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.”
1 Samuel 4:22 “And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the Ark of God is taken.”
Israel was the custodian of the Ark of covenant, which in their days represented the presence of God. It was the meeting point between God and man. The Ark was built by Moses as directed by God, and since then God dwelt in the Ark.
The Ark was the “secret weapon” with which they won several wars. It was the first thing they took to the war front. Their enemies however got to understand this fact and concluded that if they could only capture the Ark the Israelites would be vulnerable and left defenceless.
The children of Israel sinned by neglecting the commandments of God. The priests of the day violated the divine order and thus put the entire nation in a mess. There are always consequences when you violate the law of God.
The Philistines waged a relentless war against them. Unfortunately for the Philistines, they crossed their boundary. They not only defeated the Israelites, they also took with them the Ark of God as one of the spoils of war! To make matters worse, they compared the Ark of covenant to their god!
They took the Ark of God and kept it in the house of Dagon. Dagon was their god. They placed the Ark side by side with Dagon. Alas, when they woke up the following day, Dagon was flat on its before the Ark.
Since they lacked correct spiritual understanding, they felt it was a mere coincidence; so they picked up Dagon again and restored it to its original position. But guess what?
