Exodus 17:11 “It turned out that whenever Moses raised his hands, Israel was winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, Amalek was winning.”
Exodus 17:12 “But Moses’ hands got tired. So they got a stone and set it under him. He sat on it and Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on each side. So his hands remained steady until the sun went down.”
Exodus 17:13 “Joshua defeated Amalek and its army in battle.” (MSG)
Exodus 18:19 “Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:”
Jethro saw how success had suddenly intoxicated Moses; he knew that if nothing was done, Moses would die and make his daughter a widow!
He quickly stepped in and told Moses not to get to the point where his hands would become too heavy to receive help.
If it were to be some other leaders I am sure they’ll sit Jethro down and silence him with their experience of God. They’ll probably ask Jethro if he had spoken to God face-to-face before.
Exodus 33:11 “And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend…”
I am sure if it was you and I, we would probably ask the man if he had seen a burning bush that was not consumed.
Many of us might probably throw down our staff and make it turn to snake to show the man we are miracle carriers!
We would even ask him if he had ever fasted forty days and forty nights. I trust some folks I know; they would also ask him if he knew what it takes to divide the Red Sea!
I am very sure by the time ‘we” finished “educating” the man he would eat his words and even beg for forgiveness!
But not the man Moses. He humbled himself and gleaned wisdom from the old man. He quickly changed strategy and yielded to the voice of reason.
To be continued…
