Motives-11

John 12:3 “Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.”
John 12:4 “Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s [son], which should betray him,”
John 12:5 “Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?”
John 12:6 “This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.”
…From yesterday…
Matthew 6:2 “Therefore when thou doest [thine] alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.”
Jesus brought these folks to our notice. They are the “great philanthropists”. They always want people to see them as doing good and helping others. They do good actually but then Jesus said their motive is wrong!
I love the way the message translation puts it:
Matthew 6:1 “Be especially careful when you are trying to be good so that you don’t make a performance out of it. It might be good theater, but the God who made you won’t be applauding.
Matthew 6:2 “When you do something for someone else, don’t call attention to yourself. You’ve seen them in action, I’m sure–‘playactors’ I call them–treating prayer meeting and street corner alike as a stage, acting compassionate as long as someone is watching, playing to the crowds. They get applause, true, but that’s all they get.”
They reason why they do the good is so “that they may have glory of men…” I am sure you know such men, but I am hoping you’re not one! They do you a $10 worth of favour and tell the whole world it was $1000. They want the whole world to know they are the one that gave you the stuff.
To be continued…
