Numbering-1
Psalms 90:12 “So teach [us] to number our days, that we may apply [our] hearts unto wisdom.”
I want to welcome you to this great month of May 2015. It shall surely be a month of great exploit and breakthroughs for us in Jesus name. The grace of God will be sufficient for us and we shall have cause to smile in Jesus mighty name, amen.
If you’ve attended birthdays before, especially those of senior citizens where you hear preaching, not just the one you party without remembring the one that made the day possible, one scripture you will likely hear is Psalm 90:12. Sometimes I’m tempted to think it is the only Psalm for birthdays. I’m sure you’ll agree with me.
It is a wonderful Psalm and it drives home the birthday message. This Psalm was written by Moses, as agreed upon by several bible scholars. It is a Psalm about numbers and how it applies to age and wisdom.
The concept of numbering is quite an interesting one and I’ll like us to take it from that angle.
Numbering according to science talks about a sequence of numbers indicating order or otherwise used for identification. It is also the action of creating or assigning such a sequence for identification.
A concept we are more familiar with that closely resembles numbering is what we call counting. However, counting is much more easier to do than to number. When you count, you lump quantities together and assign a single number to them.
For example, you can count and easily say we have 30 students in a class but when you number, each student is given a unique identifier, such that you can easily refer to each by their number.
Now, this is what I am driving at. Our text says, “we should number our days not count our days!”
It is however very unfortunate that most of us simply count our days and not number them.
Friend, numbering our days is simply making the days count!
To be continued…
