Joshua 6:1 “Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel…”
I love the American history so much. I am always enriched each time I have cause to read about the founding fathers of the American people. I discovered that the founding fathers of America have deep spiritual knowledge and understanding. This knowledge has helped in making the country truly great.
Thursday 27th November 2014, was a National Holiday set aside as a National Thanksgiving day. A friend asked me why America, as busy as they are, decided to have a National Holiday on a weekday just to thank God! Well, I couldn’t proffer an immediate answer but my inquisitive mind went to work and I began to ask questions.
I discovered that Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day , is a holiday celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November. It has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863, when, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens”, those were his words.
At the time Lincoln proclaimed the national holiday, the country was divided by a bloody civil war which threatened the corporate existence of this great nation. It was a tough period in American history and there was seemingly nothing to be thankful for. But, as a history writer describe, “In the midst of all this, President Abraham Lincoln took the extraordinary step of declaring a national day of Thanksgiving. Making it an annual holiday to observe the blessing the Almighty God had seen fit to bestow upon a fractured people.”
On that blessed day, his Army Generals, Lieutenants and Advisers gathered, expecting him to discuss new military strategies for the war… to be continued
