Prioritization-6
Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
God belives in order and setting of priorities, if not He will not have asked us to seek His Kingdom first. If we are to seek something first, then there must be something to seek second, third and in that order. Emphasising the wrong things in life, making secondary things primary and making primary things secondary makes for a mediocre life!
A great guide to prioritization is the Pareto principle, also known as the 80/20 rule or the law of the Vital Few. This principle is being used in management and most great managers know it. The Pareto principle states that, “It is 20% of your efforts that gives you 80% of your returns’. It is your responsibility to know the Vital few, that is the 20% effort that gives the 80% output. Once you recognize them, keep them on top of your priority list and concentrate on them.
In 1906, Vilfredo Pareto discovered that 80% of the land in Italy are owned by 20% of the population. He then carried out an experiment where he proved this theory. He demonstrated it by showing that 20% of the pea pods in his garden contained 80% of the peas. “For many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes”, that was Pareto’s conclusion.
Other people picked up the work and came up with findings such as: 20% of your staff gives you 80% of the profit, 80% of your sales come from 20% of your clients.
The Pareto principle is a key guide in setting your priorities. Jesus demonstrated this principle! He had several disciples, he had the 70, he had the 12, he had the 3. He spent more time with the 12 out of the 70. He concentrated his effort on the 12 that gave him his highest yield and the world is yet to recover from their expoits!…to be continued
